Heidelberg United bolster squad with impressive duo

NPL Victoria Men's outfit Heidelberg United have strengthened its title credentials with the impressive signings of Japanese defender Shigeto Masuda and the return of striker Kenny Athiu.

Masuda boasts a strong pedigree having played his entire career across the top three divisions in Japan, amassing over 150 appearances and scoring 14 goals.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who began his professional journey with Albirex Niigata in the Japanese top-flight, most recently plied his trade at Blaublitz Akita in the J2 League.

Meanwhile, the Bergers also announced fan favourite Athiu has re-joined the club following a stint in the A-League Men's competition before venturing into Asia.

Nicknamed 'King Kenny', the 30-year-old netted over 40 goals in more than 70 games with Heidelberg between 2014 and 2017.

Athiu is also best remembered for his stunning finish in Heidelberg's 1-0 win in the Australia Cup 2017 Round of 32 against Perth Glory.

The forward subsequently secured a move to Melbourne Victory, accumulating 51 appearances and four goals.

In 2021, he agreed to sign with Sri Pahang in the Malaysia Super League, where he scored five goals in 11 matches and then had a brief spell in Cambodia with Visakha FC.

Heidelberg United begin the 2023 season at home to Dandenong Thunder on Friday, 17 February.
