Match of the Round- Charlestown Azzurri 2-1 Weston Workers FC
Weston Workers ended Charlestown Azzurri's six-match winning streak with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.
The Bears made themselves at home at Lisle Carr Oval for the opening 30 minutes enjoying most of the possession.
A corner for Weston's Aaron Niyonkuru broke the deadlock after 31 minutes.
Cooper Buswell outjumped Taylor Regan at the near post and flicked the ball onto the back post.
Azzurri could only clear into the path of Liam Wilson who blasted into the top left corner from 18 yards to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
Japanese import Yuta Konagaya stamped his presence on the game with strong penetrating runs from midfield creating space for his Weston team mates to exploit.
On 53 minutes Charlestown Azzurri coach James Pascoe made his intentions clear sharpening the attack with the introduction of veteran striker Rene Ferguson and Spanish playmaker Miguel Fernandez.
But a juggernaut run from Weston's Jacob Dundas could only be stopped by a foul and the free kick resulted in their second goal.
Niyonkuru spectacularly curled the ball into the top left corner to double the lead 2-0 and celebrated with a backflip to the delight of the travelling supporters.
On 61 minutes Regan played a perfectly weighted through-ball to Jacob Melling on the left wing who crossed the ball to Ferguson for the evergreen 34-year-old to volley into the net.
The momentum shifted to Azzurri who were pressing for an equaliser which Bears coach Kew Jaliens sensed, with Jaliens out of the dug-out and shouting instructions.
"I told them to try to control the pace of the game and to play with the head instead of the legs," Jaliens said.
"Everything happened at 100 kilometres an hour and sometimes you have to play smart, especially if the score is going your way,"
Charlestown Azzurri continued to pour forwards until Jaliens introduced right winger Dieuseul Kandundaho.
Kandundaho made an instant impact with penetrating runs down the right wing and his introduction prevented dangerous Azzurri left back Jethro Elkington from roaming forwards.
An altercation on 72 minutes resulted in Weston's Paul Sichalwe being shown a red card and Azzurri's Matthew Johnson shown a yellow card.
With 10 men, Jaliens adjusted the formation, Niyonkuru dropped into midfield and Kandundaho switched to the left to create an outlet for Weston.
Azzurri threw the kitchen sink at Weston in the last five minutes and came close to equalising on several occasions with a bombardment of aerial attacks.
But through solid defending and a pinch of luck the Bears held on for a 2-1 victory.
It was a remarkable twist in this year's competition considering Azzurri had not conceded a goal at their home ground all season and had only conceded two goals in the competition.
It was an entertaining match played in the manner Dutch international Jaliens is accustomed to.
"A great result, I think it was a good game from both sides," Jaliens said.
"Both teams wanted to play and played to win. It was an open game and I think it was enjoyable for the ones watching the game which what it is all about.”
After six wins from six, Charlestown Azzurri coach James Pascoe reflected on their first loss and dropped points of the season.
"A good competitive match. I felt Weston had the better of the first half and we had the better of the second half," Pascoe said.
"Being their first game in 14 or 15 days they started brightly and energetically but we finished strongly and but for some excellent defending late on from Weston probably could have shared the points.”

Adamstown Rosebud 0-3 Lambton Jaffas
Reigning champions Lambton Jaffas made it four wins from four and continued their ascendency up the table with a clinical 3-0 win over Adamstown Rosebud on Saturday.
Jaffas’ attacking trio of Kale Bradbery, Finn Todhunter and Sam Webb looked dangerous from the opening seconds at Adamstown Oval.
After five minutes the warning signs were out as Webb penetrated down the right wing and delivered a delightful cross to Bradbery who missed the target.
Five minutes later Bradbery marauded down the left wing and delivered an exquisite cross into Webb who struck the ball over the crossbar from close range.
Adamstown had several counter attacks with Ryan Rooke penetrating the back line and coming close on several occasions but it remained scoreless at half-time.
But whatever Lambton Jaffas coach David Tanchevski said at half-time worked.
"We just talked about being more clinical in the second half," Tanchevski said.
"Upping the tempo of our ball movement and winning the second phase of play as a lot of long balls were being played by the opposition.
"We needed to win more of the second ball.”
The Jaffas came out flying in the second half scoring within two minutes of the resumption of play.
A nifty one-two between Bradbery and Josh Benson forced a foul from 25 yards out.
Reece Papas produced a top class free kick into the top left corner to put the Jaffas 1-0 ahead.
Jaffas introduced Riley McNaughton after an hour who instantly added steel and quality to the midfield.
"Riley had been sick with a virus so he didn't start but I wanted to move Ben Hay into striker and inject some more energy and win some more ball in the middle of the park. Riley definitely gave us that," Tanchevski said.
On 63 minutes, McNaughton carried the ball from his own half and combined a neat one-two with Bradbery to penetrate down the left wing.
McNaughton played in Finn Todhunter who crossed to Bradbery who capped off a terrific team goal.
On 76 minutes Tanchevski rested his two most prominent attackers in Bradbery and Webb.
"I thought they were looking fatigued and we needed some fresh legs. Bailey Newton and Scott Pettit came on and combined to score the third goal."
The movement of the Jaffas created headaches for the opposition as players seamlessly transitioned into different roles throughout the match.
"We are lucky enough to have a few players that can play different positions. We will often switch our wingers and striker and our eight and 10 will interchange," Tanchevski said.
On 93 minutes Bailey Newton penetrated the back line and played through to Pettit who blasted into the top left corner to wrap up a clinical 3-0 victory for the Jaffas.
Twelve points from four matches has catapulted the Jaffas into second place on the table after a sluggish start.
Tanchevski reflected on the match and his relentless quest to raise the bar.
"Comfortable game but we missed way too many chances in the first half," Tanchevski said.
"A couple of tap-ins from a few yards out, we should have been up by a few at half-time and had the game under control earlier.
"But overall was a pretty comfortable win with a 6 out of 10 performance from how we want to play.”

Edgeworth FC 3-2 Cooks Hill United
Edgeworth scored three times in an electric opening 15 minutes before Cooks Hill launched a second half comeback but ultimately the Eagles held on for a 3-2 victory on Sunday.
It only took four minutes for the Eagles to open the scoring at Jack McLaughlan Oval from a clinical counterattack.
Joseph Melmeth played a sublime ball from the halfway line into Jarryd Sutherland who did not need to break stride and side footed into the net with his first touch.
On 13 minutes Edgeworth floated over a corner kick, Melmeth's first attempt was blocked but the ball landed to Jordan Lennon who picked up the pieces and nodded home to make it 2-0.
Cooks Hill started to chase the game and attacked from the kick off but the ball landed in the hands of Edgeworth goalkeeper Nate Cavaliere.
Cavaliere's quick thinking resulted in a quick throw to Tyson Jackson at right back, who sent Sutherland charging down the left wing.
A perfectly weighted ball landed at the feet of Sascha Montefiore who side-footed past the goalkeeper.
At 3-0 down after 15 minutes Cooks Hill were shellshocked but they regrouped.
Cooks Hill never gave up and their fighting spirit was rewarded on 63 minutes when Edgeworth cleared a cross to the lurking Daniel Minors who instinctively struck the ball first time into the net from 18 yards.
On 72 minutes Cooks Hill's Sam Marr burst down the right wing and delivered a precision cross for Nick Russell to stretch home on the volley.
The last five minutes was end-to-end football as Cooks Hill peppered the goal in search of an equaliser and Edgeworth hit the post and had a goal disallowed.
After a dream start, Edgeworth coach Peter McGuinness was happy to walk away with all three points.
"I thought we started the game really well and capitalised on some of the opportunities we created," McGuinness said.
"In the second half, to Cooks Hill's credit, they really came at us and pushed hard for a result.
"We had a few chances in the second half where we hit the post and had one disallowed for offside but we were on the back foot towards the end.
"Happy to secure three points and stay in touch with the top five.”
