Match of the Round
Broadmeadow Magic 3-3 Newcastle Olympic
A 95th minute Adriana Konjarski free kick salvaged a point for Broadmeadow on Sunday as heavyweights Magic and Newcastle Olympic played out an exhilarating 3-3 draw.
In was a breathtaking contest and one that will surely be one of the matches of the season, the great rivals went into the clash with 100 per cent records and looking to take an early lead in the premiership race.
And it was the hosts who were gifted the advantage on 16 minutes at Magic Park when Konjarski opened the scoring from the penalty spot.
Magic midfielder Kobie Ferguson robbed Olympic midfielder Jess Evans of possession on top of the Olympic penalty area, with Evans only able to foul Ferguson as she attempted to win the ball back.
The visitors drew level eight minutes before half-time when Georgia Cook produced an expert finish after being played in one on one following some tidy lead up play from Georgia Amess and Jorjia Hogg.
And Olympic took the lead on 65 minutes when Sophie McDonald played a perfect through pass for Jemma House, with the pacey forward racing clear before finishing past Ruby Jones.
But the match would swing again shortly after when Zoe Horgan brought down Chelsea Lucas out wide on Magic’s left.
Konjarski floated in a high free kick which sailed over the head of Olympic goalkeeper Alex Tagaroulias, who had replaced Jayla Murphy just moments earlier.
Olympic looked to have finally won it three minutes from full-time when House did brilliantly down the left before cutting the ball back. Magic defender Kalista Hunter appeared to intercept the ball, only for it to bobble in the goalmouth before Jannali Hunter fired it into her own net while attempting to clear.
But Magic refused to quit.
Broadmeadow earned a free kick in the 96th minute when Evans brought down substitute Sunny Mitchell in a similar position to Konjarski’s second goal.
And it was almost a replica as Konjarski’s free kick found the back of the net past Tagaroulias to make it 3-3, complete her hat-trick and spark wild celebrations.
In what was a feisty contest, referee Alison Macready showed 12 yellow cards and a red card, with Magic defender Kirstyn Antoni shown a second yellow card following the late equaliser.
While Magic and Olympic remain unbeaten, the pair have fallen two points off the pace behind leaders Charlestown Azzurri.
Broadmeadow will face a tough test away at Maitland on Sunday, while Newcastle Olympic travel to Alder Park to face New Lambton.
Adamstown Rosebud JFC 0-0 New Lambton FC
New Lambton secured its first point of the season after playing out a goalless draw with Adamstown Rosebud on Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles arrived at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility having shown great improvement on last season during the opening three rounds but so far unable to register a point.
Greg Lowe’s side had suffered 4-1, 3-0 and 2-0 defeats to Broadmeadow, Charlestown and Maitland respectively heading into round four, with New Lambton looking to kick start their campaign against Rosebud.
Adamstown were looking to bounce back from its first defeat of the season after they fell 5-2 to Magic last week, having started strongly with convincing wins over Mid Coast and Warners Bay.
But neither side were able to break the deadlock, with the points shared.
New Lambton will need to find their shooting boots having scored just one goal in the opening four rounds when they host heavyweights Newcastle Olympic at Alder Park on Sunday.
Adamstown will face a tough test when they welcome leaders Charlestown Azzurri to LMRFF on Saturday night.
Warners Bay FC 0-19 Maitland FC
A five-goal haul to Chelsea Greguric and four goals each to Madeline Howard and Ainsley Childs helped Maitland to an incredible 19-0 rout of Warners Bay on Sunday.
Indianna Auddino scored a double at John Street Oval while Madison Gallegos, Amy Parkinson, Sophia Laurie and Trinity Smith were all on the scoresheet for the Magpies.
Georgia Cooksey was outstanding in the Warners Bay goal, making save after save but she could do little to stop the constant flow of Maitland attacks.
Maitland had gone into the match having lost young captain Tahlia Gossner to an ankle injury, with experienced defender Kaitlin Radstaak returning to the starting XI for the first time this season.
With first choice goalkeeper Imogene Tomasone already sidelined with a thumb injury, the Magpies were also without deputy Annabella Thornton which saw Taylah Bryde deputise in goal.
But the missing personnel did little to slow Maitland who scored their second win in a row.
The Magpies will undergo a much more difficult test when they host heavyweights Broadmeadow on Sunday, while Warners Bay will be desperate for their first points of the season when they travel to Taree to take on Mid Coast.
Charlestown Azzurri 6-3 Mid Coast FC
Charlestown Azzurri climbed to the top of the NPLW NNSW table with a 6-3 victory over Mid Coast FC on Sunday.
The three-goal win at Lisle Carr Oval maintained Charlestown’s perfect start to the season as Emily Diaz continued her excellent form in front of goal, scoring five times.
It took Diaz less than seven minutes to open the scoring, latching on to a fine through pass from Brianna Williams to round Caitlin Horwood and finish calmly.
The visitors levelled in the 16th minute when Azzurri failed to clear their lines, with the ball falling to Sophie Gallagher who produced a deft finish over Malli Blanch.
Azzurri regained the lead eight minutes before half-time when Diaz scored almost a repeat of her first goal, this time thanks to Sarah Halvorsen’s through pass.
Charlestown went route one for their third goal a minute later. Evie Horgan knocked a fantastic long free kick which Lilly-Jane Babic pounced on before firing powerfully beyond Horwood.
Azzurri all but sealed the result on 63 minutes when Halvorsen provided a delightful cross for Diaz who had time to pull the ball down before volleying home to complete her hat-trick.
Diaz added her fourth and Azzurri’s fifth 13 minutes from full-time when Horgan played another pass from deep, with Diaz winning the ball before beating Horwood.
Diaz completed her magic afternoon in the 83rd minute with a fine header.
But Mid Coast refused to quit and found time to score twice late on.
Gemma Murphy-Waters produced a sublime flick for Gallagher to calmly hold off Jorja Brown and finish under Blanch.
Middies then went from back to front to complete the scoring. A goal kick was flicked on in the middle of the park with the ball finding its way to Sarah King who produced a wonderful finish to make it 6-3.
It was too little, too late for the visitors, though player-coach Emma Stanbury would have taken plenty from her young side’s never say die attitude.
Middies will look to secure their first points of the season when they host struggling Warners Bay on Sunday, while Charlestown will attempt to maintain their place on top of the table when they tackle Adamstown on Saturday night.
