Let’s check out the mini reviews from Round 6 of the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW Women’s competition.
Catch up on all of the action below.
Match of the Round - Warners Bay FC 0-5 New Lambton FC
New Lambton ended its long winless drought as the Golden Eagles secured their first win in 634 days with a 5-0 victory over Warners Bay on Sunday.
Both sides were winless heading into the clash at John Street Oval with the Golden Eagles one point ahead of the Panthers thanks to their goalless draw with Adamstown.
New Lambton had only scored one goal so far this campaign and matched their season tally when Tara Pender’s free kick evaded Warners Bay goalkeeper Georgia Cooksey.
The Golden Eagles doubled their advantage moments before half-time when Airlie Davis bombed forward from the back to score against her former club with a finish high into the top corner.
And the visitors managed to take a 3-0 lead to half-time when Ayva Steele was adjudged to have fouled Taleah Mountford in the penalty area in added time after a brilliant through pass from Kate Heap.
Mountford took the penalty herself and rolled the ball past Cooksey low to the goalkeeper’s right.
Ameera Makunja celebrated her return from injury with a second half brace after coming on as a substitute to secure the result.
The win was a long time coming for New Lambton, who endured a winless 2022 season. Their previous victory came in a 3-2 win over Charlestown Azzurri at Alder Park in July 2021.
The win saw New Lambton climb to sixth, while Warners Bay remain rooted to the foot of the table.
Broadmeadow Magic 3-1 Charlestown Azzurri
Broadmeadow ended Charlestown’s unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 victory on Sunday.
Azzurri arrived at Magic Park having won their first five matches of the campaign to sit five points clear at the top of the table.
The hosts were looking to bounce back from their 5-2 defeat to Maitland a fortnight ago and got off to a strong start when they took the lead on 15 minutes after Kalista Hunter bundled in a Kiarra Lewis corner.
Magic doubled their advantage seconds before half-time through a stunning Kirstyn Antoni strike.
Antoni, playing in a more advanced midfield role, picked up the ball 10 metres inside Azzurri’s half. She then powered through Charlestown’s midfield before unleashing a brilliant left foot shot from 25 metres out past Malli Blanch.
Azzurri pulled a goal back on 64 minutes as Emily Diaz kept up her fine form in front of goal.
Katerina Papaspiropoulos did brilliantly in midfield to shield the ball before turning and playing in substitute Jess Gentle down the left.
Gentle had too much pace for Hunter before squaring for Diaz to tap in past the returning Alison Logue.
The visitors desperately chased an equaliser that would not come, with Magic finally making sure of the points in added time.
Kobie Ferguson robbed Papaspiropoulos in the middle of the park before launching a through ball for Lucy Jerram. Jerram squared for Adriana Konjarski to fire home from close range.
The win saw Magic close to two points behind Azzurri, who remain two points clear at the top of the table ahead of Newcastle Olympic and Broadmeadow.
Newcastle Olympic 5-1 Adamstown Rosebud
Newcastle Olympic scored its second big win over Adamstown in a week as Sophie McDonald’s hat-trick sealed a 5-1 victory on Sunday.
Rosebud had gone down 6-1 to Olympic in their Women’s League Cup clash on Monday but took the lead inside three minutes at Darling Street thanks to Mia Owens’ opener after she tapped home following strong work from Courtney Anderson on the right.
Olympic were level on 24 minutes when McDonald cut the ball back for Jemma House who smashed the ball into the top corner past Olivia Sneddon.
It remained 1-1 at half-time with McDonald breaking the deadlock with 20 minutes to play as she took advantage of some soft defending to turn and fire past Sneddon to give Olympic the lead.
McDonald had her second and Olympic’s third three minutes later when she was again allowed to turn and run at Sneddon. The Adamstown No.1 managed to stop McDonald’s first shot but could do nothing about the rebound.
Olympic sealed the result four minutes later when Adamstown failed to clear a corner, with Sophia Walmsley’s looping header making it 4-1 to the hosts.
But McDonald still had time to complete her hat-trick five minutes from full-time when she again danced through the middle of Adamstown’s defence before finishing low past Sneddon.
The win saw Olympic remain second, two points behind leaders Charlestown, while Adamstown have slipped to five points behind fifth-placed Maitland.
Maitland FC 10-0 Mid Coast FC
Madeline Howard, Chelsea Greguric and Mercedes McNabb all scored doubles as Maitland routed Mid Coast 10-0 on Sunday.
The Magpies secured their fourth win in a row in the drubbing at Cooks Square Park with Sophia Laurie, Sophie Jones and Lucy Kell also on the scoresheet.
Former Newcastle Olympic midfielder Keely Gawthrop also celebrated her Maitland debut with a goal.
Greguric had the chance to complete a hat-trick, only for Mid Coast goalkeeper Finlay Harry to save her penalty early in the second half.
Maitland were rock solid defensively, barely giving Mid Coast a hint of a chance as the Magpies romped to their second double-digit win of the campaign.
The win saw Maitland remain fourth but close to just three points behind leaders Charlestown, while Mid Coast remain on three points in seventh.
The match also doubled as the Women’s League Cup fixture between the clubs, with Maitland advancing to the semi-finals.
The draw for the semi-finals will be made on Tuesday.
