NPL NNSW Women's Round 7 Review

Let’s check out the mini reviews from Round 7 of the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW Women’s competition.

Catch up on all of the action below.

Match of the Round - Charlestown Azzurri 0-2 Newcastle Olympic

Newcastle Olympic climbed to the top of the NPL Women’s NNSW table with a 2-0 victory over Charlestown Azzurri on Sunday.

Olympic arrived at Lisle Carr Oval in second place, two points behind leaders Azzurri, keen to put the pressure on the hosts who had lost their first game of the season to Broadmeadow the previous week.

The visitors made the perfect start when Jemma House gave them the lead inside six minutes. Azzurri goalkeeper Malli Blanch made a fine save from Sophie McDonald’s close range effort. But Maddison Thornton’s clearance found House’s feet, with Blanch unable to do anything about House’s first time effort.

Olympic doubled their advantage on 19 minutes when Elodie Dagg produced a goal of the season contender.

Marion Dunbabin teed the ball up for Dagg, with Dagg hitting it first time into the top left corner leaving Blanch no chance.

The victory saw Olympic, who remain unbeaten and hold a match in hand, overthrow Azzurri at the summit on goal difference from Broadmeadow.

Olympic will look to keep their undefeated start going when they host struggling Warners Bay on Saturday.

Azzurri will attempt to avoid a third straight defeat when they travel to Maitland to face the Magpies on Sunday.

New Lambton FC 2-0 Mid Coast FC

New Lambton waited 634 days for their previous win last weekend but they only had to wait seven days for a second when they downed Mid Coast 2-0 on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles, fresh off their drought-breaking 5-0 victory over Warners Bay last weekend, welcomed Middies to Alder Park looking to climb further away from the foot of the table.

Ameera Makunja continued her fine form since returning from injury as she gave New Lambton the lead after 15 minutes when she raced through to finish past Caitlin Horwood following Tara Pender’s delicate through pass.

And it was Pender who sealed the result four minutes from full-time when substitute Freya Clifton played her through on goal after good work from Makunja down the left.

The win saw New Lambton remain sixth, five points behind fourth-placed Maitland, while Middies remain seventh.

New Lambton will face another tough test when they host Broadmeadow on Sunday, while Middies meet Adamstown on Saturday night.

Warners Bay FC 0-16 Broadmeadow Magic

Adriana Konjarski scored six goals as Broadmeadow Magic thrashed Warners Bay 16-0 on Sunday.

Konjarski, the 2022 NPLW NNSW Player of the Year and Golden Boot winner, added another six goals to her season tally as Magic made light work of the reigning premiers and champions.

Kiarra Lewis scored a hat-trick for Broadmeadow while Lucy Jerram, Chelsea Lucas and Gemma Harrison all scored doubles. Kalista Hunter added a 16th goal in added time.

It was another tough day at John Street Oval for Warners Bay, who have now conceded 87 goals in their opening seven matches.

It does not get any easier for the Panthers, who face unbeaten leaders Newcastle Olympic at Darling Street on Saturday.

Magic, who climbed to second above Charlestown thanks to the victory, will look for another strong performance against New Lambton on Sunday.

Adamstown Rosebud JFC 3-2 Maitland FC

Adamstown Rosebud produced the upset of the weekend, downing in-form Maitland 3-2 on Sunday night.

The Magpies went into the clash at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility having won four straight matches, with Keelan Hamilton’s side looking to close within one point of the premiership lead.

But, as torrential rain fell, Adamstown took the lead inside 20 minutes when Josie Morley headed home a Mia Owens corner.

Rosebud held onto their lead until half-time and doubled their advantage 12 minutes into the second half when Courtney Anderson fired high past Imogene Tomasone.

Maitland halved the deficit with 20 minutes to play when Mercedes McNabb smashed the ball home after Chelsea Greguric had got on the end of a Madeline Howard cross.

But Adamstown restored their two-goal lead six minutes later. Ashleigh Vetter intercepted a loose Lisa Cochrane pass in the middle of the park before turning and driving at the Maitland defence, with Eva Donnelly providing a perfect cross for Morley to tap home her second.

The Magpies refused to quit though and pulled a goal back through McNabb’s second with Howard again the provider.

That set up a nervy finish but Adamstown held on to reduce the gap to the fourth-placed Magpies to just two points.

Rosebud will look to build on their win when they host Mid Coast on Saturday night, while Maitland will look to bounce back when they host Charlestown on Sunday.
