NPL QLD Men’s Round 13 Review

League leaders Gold Coast Knights extended their advantage at the top of the  NPL Queensland Men’s standings after being the only side inside the top five to pick up three points across the weekend’s Round 13 action.

Gold Coast Knights extended their lead at the top to four points with a commanding 5-1 victory over Eastern Suburbs at the Croatian Sports Centre on Sunday evening.

Max Brown lead the scoring for Knights with a brace while Godfrey Debele, Ante Poljak and Christian Mladenis also got in on the goalscoring act for Scott McDonald’s side who are now unbeaten in 12 in the league.

After relenting top spot last weekend Gold Coast United lost their second match on the trot going down 1-0 to Young Roar at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Waddingham scored the games only goal, finding the bottom corner with a shot on the turn in the 59th minute to leave Roar within a point of fourth placed City at the end of the weekend.

Third placed Moreton Bay United also suffered defeat going down 2-1 to Rochedale Rovers at Underwood Park on Sunday evening.

Sam Sibatuara brought down a Cooper McMormack cross and finished to put Rochedale ahead after seven minutes before Jeremy Stewart found the top corner from a tight angle five minutes later to level the scores.

Andy Thompson secured the points for the home side with a pinpoint free kick in the 72nd minute as the Rovers made it five wins from their last six outings.

Brisbane City and Peninsula Power shared the spoils as they played out 1-1 draw at Imperial Corp Stadium on Saturday night.

Kye Bolton opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a driven effort from the edge of the area that found the bottom corner on the end of a short corner.

Malakai Love-Semira levelled the scores with his first league goal for 2023 in the 74th minute when he got in behind the City defence and slid a finish into the bottom to steal a share of the spoils for Power.

Both sides finished with ten men after Josh Woolley and Noah Maieroni were dismissed in the 84th minute for their parts in a scuffle that took place inside the City technical area.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers moved six points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Lions at Luxury Paints Stadium on Saturday evening.

Connor Lilley scored the only goal of the game when he pounced to finish into an empty net after Kyan Bryant’s initial effort came back off the post.

Saturday’s victory over the defending Premiers snapped an eight-game winless run for the Wanderers in Kevin Aherne-Evans first match in charge.

Redlands United completed a league double over Olympic with a 2-1 victory at Compass Grounds on Friday night.

It took the home side just 25 seconds to open the scoring via a Guilherme Santana volley before Costa Psaros slid home first goal of the season in the 11th minute to level the scores.

The decisive goal came in the 31st minute from a Ryo Emoto spot-kick after Matt Mundy handled the ball inside the area.
