Gold Coast United have moved two points clear at the top of the NPL Queensland standings and remain the league’s only undefeated side following the weekend’s Round 6 action.
United moved top courtesy of a 1-0 victory over defending Premiers Lions in a top-of-the-table clash at Luxury Paints Stadium on Sunday night.
Cai Tipaldo scored the games decisive goal, finding the back of the net with an opportunistic finish after Jackson Hart-Phillips skewed clearance fell into his path inside the area.
At the other end of the park Grae Piddick’s side, who have conceded just one goal this season held firm for their fifth clean sheet in six games.
Lions weren’t the only side to have their unbeaten record ended on Sunday evening with Sunshine Coast Wanderers slipping to a 2-0 defeat at the of Eastern Suburbs at Ballinger Park.
Tuqiri Beckett put the visitors ahead with a stunning half-volley into the top corner in the 58th minute before Diego Cuba rounded out the 2-0 score line with a well placed finish from the top of the box in second half stoppage time.
Defeats for Lions and Wanderers allowed Moreton Bay to leapfrog the pair into second place courtesy of a 2-0 triumph over Redlands United at Compass Grounds on Saturday night.
Ben Holliday scored his first league goal for the Jets with a back post volley in the sixth minute before Marquez Walters rounded Ryan Govan and finished in the 50th minute to seal the points for Cameron Millar’s side.
Walters goal was his fifth of the season which sees him move level with Brisbane City’s Matt Thurtell at the top of the goal scorers charts.
Thurtell’s City suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of defending Champions Gold Coast Knights at Imperial Corp Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
City lead 1-0 at the break thanks a Luke Plummer goal but a long-range strike from Tyson Martin against his former club in the 60th minute followed by a Godfrey Debele dinked finish ten minutes from time saw Knights fight back to take the points and climb to fourth.
In Saturday’s other match Young Roar climbed to seventh on the ladder with a 2-1 victory over Rochedale at AJ Kelly Park.
Roar found the back of the net through Ayom Majok and Thomas Waddingham before Rochedale scored grabbed a consolation goal through Mitchell Roberts in second half stoppage time.
In the final match of the weekend Olympic picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 win over Peninsula Power at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday night.
Daniel Leck scored a hat-trick for Royce Brownlies side, who climb to tenth with Sunday’s win while Joshua Woolley was on target for Power who are left rooted to the bottom of the table.
