NPL QLD Women’s Round 12 Preview

Another full weekend of NPL Queensland Women’s action awaits with matches getting underway from Saturday afternoon.

League leaders Lions host third placed Peninsula Power at Luxury Paints Stadium on Saturday night.

Just three points separate the sides heading into Saturday’s contest which also pits Bonnie Davies and Tegan Riding who sit equal second on the top goal scorers charts against one another, both players have netted 12 goals so far this season.

Lions came from behind to win 2-1 when the sides met at the same venue in Round 3 thanks to a pair of late goals from Teagan Thompson and Tegan Riding.

Sitting ahead of Davies and Riding at the top of the leading goal scorers charts with 13 is Kallie Peurifoy whose Mitchelton side travel to face Capalaba at Max Haynes Field on Saturday afternoon.

Fifth placed Mitchelton know they must pick up three points if they are to close the eleven point gap between themselves and fourth placed Gold Coast United against a Capalaba side who slipped into the relegation zone following a 4-1 loss to QAS last weekend.

A 91st minute Jolianne Cruz winner secured a 2-1 win for the Mustangs when the sides faced one another in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

In Sunday’s opening match eighth placed Souths United host fourth placed Gold Coast United at Wakerley Park.

United moved eleven points clear of fifth placed Mitchelton with a 2-1 win over Olympic on Thursday night while Souths will be desperate for a win with only goal difference keeping them out of the relegation zone.

Goals from Bronte Rose and Momo Hayashi secured a 2-0 win for Gold Coast United when the sides met at Coplicks in Round 3.

QAS will be looking to pick up their second win in as many weeks when they face Olympic at Meakin Park on Sunday evening.

The crop of youngsters who are coached by former Olympic duo Liz Doherty and Isaka Cernak picked up their second win of the season with a victory against at the same venue Capalaba last weekend.

QAS’s only other win came against Olympic with a 4-1 triumph in Round 3 at Briggs Road thanks to goals from Tully Heatley, Mackenzie Nielsen and Ella O’Grady.

Olympic are currently rooted to the bottom of the table with just one win to their name this season and sit five points adrift of ninth placed Capalaba.

The weekend’s final match pits Sunshine Coast Wanderers against Eastern Suburbs at Ballinger Park on Sunday evening.

Wanderers are another side who only sit outside the relegation zone on goal difference and will have a big job keeping second placed Easts who have won their last five matches on the bounce at bay.
