NPL QLD Women’s Round 13 Preview

Suncorp Stadium has been confirmed as the venue for the 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s Grand Final adding that touch of extra spice to four exciting Round 13 ties coming up this Sunday.

Two sides who will have their eyes firmly on September’s season showpiece meet in a top-of-the-table clash when first place Lions host second placed Eastern Suburbs at Luxury Paints Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Easts ended Lions 61 game unbeaten streak that stretched 837 days with a 3-1 win when the sides met at Heath Park in Round 4.

Now with Lachlan Leong’s side trailing Lions by just two points at the top of the table they’ll head into Sunday’s match knowing three points will see them leapfrog Lions into first position.

Lions meanwhile have dropped just two points since their Round 4 defeat at Heath Park and have been boosted by the additions of Brisbane Roar duo Jamilla Rankin and Zara Kruger in recent weeks.

Third placed Peninsula Power will see Sunday as an opportunity to make up ground on at least one of the sides above them when they host Capalaba at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday afternoon.

Power start the weekend six points adrift of the league leaders after losing to Lions last weekend.

They’ll come up against a Capalaba side who they beat 5-0 in the reverse fixture at Max Haynes field in March thanks to goals from Bonnie Davies and Sara D’Appolonia.

The Bulldogs will be desperate for a win after slipping into the relegation in recent weeks and come into Sunday’s clash off the back of a 2-1 loss to Mitchelton last weekend.

Fourth placed Gold Coast United take on eighth placed Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Coplicks Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.

After a strong start to the season United’s form has waned in recent week’s with Sarah Evans side picking up just two wins from their past seven matches.

Wanderers meanwhile, who lost to Easts last weekend are above the relegation zone only by goal difference but will know a win will see them shoot up the ladder in a tightly congested bottom half of the table.

United won 4-0 when the sides went head-to-head at Ballinger Park in Round 5 thanks to goals from Zoe Corbett, Momo Hayashi and Charlotte Farmer.

Mitchelton have a number of new faces in line to make their first appearances for the club when they host Olympic at Teralaba Park on Sunday.

The Mustangs recruitment has been headlined by the addition of Melbourne Victory defender Natalie Tathem, who is joined in the arrivals lounge at Teralba Park by Kelly Giddes, Ellen Gett and Carla Wilson.

Mitchelton come up against an Olympic side who will be buoyed after picking up their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over QAS last weekend.

Despite still sitting bottom of the ladder the girls from Goodwin Park are within touching distance with teams as high as seventh and come into Sunday’s clash with fresh hope breathed into their hope for survival.

Mitchelton ran out 4-0 winners when the sides met at the same venue in March.

The weekend’s other match between QAS and Souths United has been postponed as a result of the high number of players competing at the Queensland State School Championships this week.
