NPL QLD Women’s Round 13 Review

Lions have moved five points clear at the top of the NPL Queensland Women’s standings following the weekend’s Round 13 action.

Rob Askew’s side extended their lead at the top with a 2-0 win over second placed Eastern Suburbs at Luxury Paints Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rebecca Kirkup bundled home on the end of a corner at the near post to put the home side ahead in the fourth minute before Tia Apoo volleyed an Amy Gunston cross into the back of the net to double Lions lead just ten minutes later.

Neither side was able to further impact the score line with Lions taking a big step ahead in the race for the title as they chase their third straight Premiership.

Peninsula Power moved to within a point of second placed Easts with a commanding 8-0 win over Capalaba at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday afternoon.

Sara D’Appolonia lead the scoring with four goals, while Bonnie Davies, Kirrily Phillips Libby Cybulski and Jemima Head were all also on target for Mick Gallo’s side.

Gold Coast United slipped to their second defeat in as many games, going down 1-0 to Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Coplicks on Sunday evening.

A 60th minute Isobel Berks header was all that separated the sides as the Wanderers picked up their third win of the season so far to climb to seventh on the league table.

Mitchelton’s new recruits hit the ground running as the Mustangs ran out 3-0 winners over Olympic at Teralba Park on Sunday evening.

Kelly Giddes scrambled home the opener in the 58th minute before Carla Wilson reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to score a booming volley in the 80th minute.

Genevive McDonald rounded out the scoring with a delicate finish from a tight angle five minutes later as Mitchelton reduced the gap between themselves and fourth placed Gold Coast United to just five points.

The weekend’s other match between QAS and Souths United will be played in June because of the high number of players competing at the Queensland State School Championships over the weekend.
