NPL QLD Women’s Round 14 Preview

Round 14 NPL Queensland Women’s action is here with key battles taking place at both ends of the table across the course of the weekend.

Round 14 gets underway on Friday night when third placed Peninsula Power face tenth placed Olympic at AJ Kelly Park.

Power, who ran out 2-0 winners last time the sides met moved to within a point of second placed Easts with a commanding 8-0 victory over Capalaba last weekend.

After parting ways with Head Coach Russell Summerville last weekend Olympic were beaten 3-0 by Mitchelton at Teralba Park, the club are yet to formally announce a new Head Coach.

Second placed Eastern Suburbs and fourth placed Gold Coast United go head-to-head in a top four battle at Heath Park on Saturday night.

Easts fell five points behind Lions after going down 2-0 in a top-of-the-table clash last weekend while United have won just two of their last eight games including, most recently a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sunshine Coast Wanderers last week.

An 87th minute Astia Neckebroeck strike earned United all three points with a 2-1 win when the sides met in the reverse fixture at Coplicks in Round 5.

In Saturday’s other match two sides looking to close in on the finals positions do battle at Wakerley Park with Souths United hosting Mitchelton.

Mitchelton can cut the gap between themselves and fourth placed Gold Coast United to just two points if results go to their way this weekend, while Souths who trail Mitchelton by six points beat Gold Coast in their last league outing.

A 70th minute Sunny Franco strike secured all three points for Souths when the sides went head-to-head at Teralba Park earlier this season.

On Sunday league leaders Lions look to tighten their stranglehold on top spot when they host Capalaba at Luxury Paints Stadium.

Lions moved five points clear at the top with last weekend’s win over Easts leading into Sunday’s match up against a Capalaba side they defeated 9-0 back in Round 5.

The Bulldogs, who have since slipped into the relegation zone come in Sunday’s clash off the back of another heavy defeat last weekend with an 8-0 loss at the hands of Peninsula Power.

In Sunday’s other match eighth placed QAS take on seventh placed Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Meakin Park.

The sides who played out a 1-1 draw when they last met in March are currently one and three points above the drop zone respectively so will aim to move away from danger with a win on Sunday.
