NPL QLD Women’s Round 14 Review

The 2023 NPL Queensland Women’s season has surpassed the halfway mark following the weekend’s Round 14 action.

Lions maintained their five point lead at the top of the league with a 5-1 win over Capalaba at Luxury Paints Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The league’s leading scorer Tegan Riding took her tally for the 2023 season to 17 goals with a brace while Tia Apoo, Rebecca Kirkup and Meaghan McElligott were also on target for Rob Askew’s side.

Kyla Hanson scored for the Bulldogs who announced the departure of Head Coach, Archford Kahondo prior to Sunday’s match.

Capalaba Technical Director, Gary Bailey will take charge of the side on interim basis.

Eastern Suburbs returned to the winners circle with a 2-1 victory over Gold Coast United at Heath Park on Saturday night.

The visitors lead at the break courtesy of a Mica Robinson penalty before Easts levelled the scores with a spot kick of their own converted by Maya Brueckner early in the second half.

Just a minute later Kaho Oshima turned a first-time finish into the bottom corner to put Easts ahead before Emma Starr reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the area to seal the points for the home side.

Peninsula Power remain third following a 3-0 win over Olympic at AJ Kelly Park on Friday night.

Sara D’Appolonia opened the scoring from the penalty spot with her ninth goal of the season in the 19th minute before Bonnie Davies doubled the home sides lead with a dinked finish at the near post early in the second stanza.

Five minutes later Davies nodded home her second of the night and 16th of the season to round out the scoring for Mick Gallo’s side.

Fifth placed Mitchelton cut the gap between themselves and fourth placed Gold Coast United to just two points with 3-2 win over Souths United at Wakerley Park on Saturday night.

The teams traded blows through a pair of wonder strikes from Jessica Watkins and Kallie Peurifoy to head into the sheds with the scores locked at one apiece.

Kelly Giddes put the visitors ahead with a back post finish in the 48th minute before Peurifoy netted her 15th goal of the season from the penalty spot two minutes from time.

Souths pulled a goal back via a long-range Tamar Levin free-kick in stoppage time but the visitors held on for an important three points in their pursuit of the top four.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers climbed to sixth on the ladder with a 2-0 win over QAS at Meakin Park on Sunday afternoon.
