NPL QLD Women’s Round 17 Review

Defending Premiers Lions moved further clear at the top while Mitchelton moved into the top four over the course of the weekend’s NPL Queensland Women’s Round 17 action.

Lions extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points with a 6-0 victory over QAS at Luxury Paints Stadium on Saturday night.

Amy Gunston fired home a double while Tegan Riding, Meghan McElligott, Rebecca Kirkup and Tia Appoo were also on target in a comprehensive win for Rob Askew’s side.

Peninsula Power and Eastern Suburbs lost ground on the league leaders after playing out a 1-1 draw at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday afternoon.

Sofie Persson put Easts ahead when she latched onto a loose Kirrily Phillips back pass before sliding a finish into the bottom corner.

Bonnie Davies levelled the scores in the 48th minute after she pounced on stray pass from Easts goalkeeper Emma Gibbon to finish into an open net.

Easts had the opportunity to win the match in the 76th minute when they were awarded a spot-kick but Chantelle Maugeri fired her effort against the post.
