NPL QLD Women’s Round 18 Preview

With just ten rounds remaining things are beginning to heat up right across the league table ahead of the weekend’s NPL Queensland Women’s Round 18 action.

After climbing into the top four last weekend Mitchelton will look to cement their place within the finals positions with a win over QAS at Teralba Park on Friday night.

QAS also moved up the ladder this week after defeating Souths United 1-0 on Tuesday night to start the weekend in eighth position.

Mitchelton ran out 5-3 winners in an eight-goal thriller when the two sides went head-to-head in Round 9 action earlier this season.

League leaders Lions make the trip to Wakerley Park to take on seventh placed Souths United on Saturday evening.

Lions moved seven points clear at the top with a 6-0 win over QAS over the weekend while Souths suffered defeat at the hands of the same opponents midweek.

Lions ran out comprehensive 6-1 winners over Souths when the pair met at Lions in the reverse fixture at Luxury Paints Stadium.

After slipping out of the top four last weekend Gold Coast United will look to keep pressure on the sides above them when they host third placed Peninsula Power at Coplicks Sports Park on Saturday evening.

United, who started the season neck and neck with Lions at the top have lost their last five straight matches in the league and now sit two points outside the finals places.

Bonnie Davies and Sara D’Appolonia were on target for Power in a 3-1 win for Mick Gallo’s side when the pair met in the reverse fixture at AJ Kelly Park.

Olympic aim to kickstart a move away from the foot of the league table when they host Sunshine Coast Wanderers in their first match at Goodwin Park this season on Sunday afternoon.

Olympic will finally play their first home match of the 2023 season with renovations at Goodwin Park ahead of the Women’s World Cup now complete.

They go up against Wanderers side who sit sixth with 17 points to their name and come into Sunday’s clash off the back of a 0-0 draw against Capalaba last weekend.

Wanderers defeated Olympic 2-1 thanks to a Marli Danger brace when the pair went head-to-head at Ballinger Park in April.

Second placed Eastern Suburbs host ninth placed Capalaba at Heath Park in the final match of the weekend on Sunday evening.

Easts lost ground on Lions at the top of the table after drawing with Power last weekend while Capalaba picked up in an important point in their bid to avoid relegation in a 1-1 draw against the Wanderers.

Easts ran out 4-2 winners when the sides met at Max Haynes Field back in April thanks to goals from Lauren Askin, Georgina Amos, Chantelle Maugeri and Sofie Persson.
