NPL QLD Women's Round 19 Review

There were 16 goals scored across four games in the weekend’s NPL Queensland Women’s Round 19 action.

With the league leaders out of action this weekend Eastern Suburbs cut Lions lead at the top to four points with a 2-1 win over Olympic at Heath Park on Friday night.

Sofie Persson scored a quickfire brace with a pair of finishes from acute angles to put the home side on the front foot early.

Alyssa Cox pulled one back with a poachers finish in the 35th minute but it proved to be a mere consolation as Easts hung on for all three points.

Third placed Peninsula Power returned to the winners circle with a 2-1 come from behind victory over QAS at Wakerley Park on Saturday evening.

Grace Kiulamu opened the scoring for QAS in the fifth minute when she pounced on a loose ball and rounded Power keeper Liz Harrington before finishing into an empty net.

Mick Gallo’s side fought back and found an equaliser in the 69th minute when Jemima Head got the finishing touch a corner for the visitors.

Sara D’Appolonia completed the comeback in the 82nd minute when she got in the behind the defence and finished one-on-one to seal the 2-1 victory for Power.

Fourth placed Gold Coast United made it back-to-back wins with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Capalaba at Coplicks on Saturday evening.

Bronte Rose was the star of the show netting a hat-trick, while Astia Neckebroeck and Momo Hayashi were also on target for the home side.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers picked up their fifth win of the 2023 season with a commanding 4-0 win over Souths United at Ballinger Park on Sunday evening.

Louise Rolfe and Chelsea Scarff both bagged braces as the sixth placed Wanderers moved five points ahead of seventh placed Souths.

Round 19’s final match between Mitchelton and Lions at Teralba Park will be played on Saturday, July 1.

The two sides did in fact play one another in Kappa Women’s Super Cup Semi Final action this weekend with Lions running out 2-1 winners after extra time.
