NPL QLD Women’s Round 6 Review

There were some high-scoring games in the National Premier League Queensland Women's competition as Round 6 wrapped up.

Gold Coast United 3-4 Lions FC

Defending NPL Queensland Women’s Champions Lions returned to the top of the table with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Gold Coast United at Coplicks on Saturday night.

It was United who struck first, taking the lead through Amy Langworthy who rose highest to head home a Momo Hayashi free kick in the 44th minute.

A quickfire Macey Edward double saw Lions take the lead early in the second half before substitute Minori Ono drew United level with a strike from the top of the box in the 81st minute.

Both sides were then awarded penalties in the following exchanges with Hayashi converting for the hosts in the 82nd minute before Riding again levelled the scores from the spot in the 87th minute.

Amy Gunston then popped up with a 93rd minute winner, latching onto a Riding through ball before dispatching her finish into the bottom corner to send Lions back to the top of the league.

Souths United 0-2 Peninsula Power

Third placed Peninsula Power sit just two points shy of the league leaders after defeating Souths United 2-0 at Wakerley Park on Saturday night.

Alicia Woods opened the scoring with a long range rocket in the 21st minute before Kathryn Sherar’s back post finish two minutes from time rounded out the scoring for Alex Smith’s side.

Eastern Suburbs 2-0 QAS

Fourth placed Eastern Suburbs extended the gap between themselves and those outside the finals positionss with a 2-0 win over QAS at Heath Park on Friday night.

First half goals from Sofie Persson and Harkana Tkatchenko were enough to seal the points for the Tigers who face fifth placed Mitchelton next weekend.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers 1-1 Mitchelton FC

The Mustangs moved up to fifth on the ladder after playing out a 1-1 draw against Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park on Sunday afternoon.

Kallie Peurifoy opened the scoring for the visitors with a fine strike from the edge of the area in the 62nd minute before Isobel Berks latched onto a stray back pass and finished in the  76th minute to seal Wanderers third point of the new campaign.

Capalaba 3-2 Olympic FC

Capalaba snapped a three game winless run with a last ditch 3-2 victory over bottom placed Olympic at Max Haynes Field on Sunday evening.

Bulldogs Captain Brittney Lacek opened the scoring against her former club with a 30th minute header on the end of a corner from the home side.

Olympic responded immediately, equalising through Alyssa Cox within a minute of the restart before Gabriella Francisco put the visitors ahead with a dinked finish at the back post in the 41st minute.

It took until the 82nd minute for Capalaba to equalise, finding the back of the net through Tiffany Wadsworth, who slammed an effort into the roof of the net from the edge of the area before Kyla Hanson popped up with a stoppage time winner to snatch the points for the Bulldogs.
