NPL QLD Women’s Round 7 Review

Lions have moved two points clear at the top of the NPL Queensland Women’s standings following the weekend’s Round Seven action.

The defending Champions nudged ahead of Gold Coast United in the title race courtesy of a 4-1 win over Olympic at Luxury Paints Stadium on Saturday evening.

Amy Gunston netted a brace while Rebecca Kirkup and Meghan McElligott were also on target for Rob Askew’s side.

Lions edged ahead at the top of the league after Gold Coast United were held to a 1-1 draw by QAS at Coplicks on Saturday afternoon.

QAS took the lead in the 36th minute through Daisy Brown who finished at the near post from a tight angle after finding herself in space inside the area.

It took until the 79th minute for United to find an equaliser through Zoe Corbett who reacted quickest to pounce after the QAS defence failed to clear a Momo Hayashi free-kick.

Peninsula Power moved level with United in second on 16 points after defeating Sunshine Coast Wanderers 3-1 at AJ Kelly Park on Saturday night.

Wanderers lead at the break thanks to a long-range Teyl Danger free-kick but Power hit back with a stunning Bonnie Davies strike in the 67th minute before the forward headed home her second of the night five minutes later.

Sara D’Appolonia rounded out the 3-1 win with a long -ange strike of her own in the 93rd minute.

Fourth placed Eastern Suburbs extended the gap between themselves and fifth place to five points after defeating Mitchelton in a thrilling 4-3 victory at Teralba Park on Sunday evening.

Mitchelton lead 3-2 at the break after a brace from Kallie Peurifoy was added to by Jemma Burton to cancel out Lauren Askin’s double for the visitors.

Easts levelled the scores through Sofie Persson in the 72nd minute, who finished after Emma Starr’s initial strike came crashing back of the crossbar.

The visitors then found a winner a minute later through Kaho Oshima, who turned the ball home after Jessica Joyce could only parry Maya Brueckner’s near post strike.

Souths United climbed to fifth with a 2-1 win over Capalaba at Max Haynes Field on Friday night.

Sunny Franco netted the winner in the 93rd minute from the penalty spot after the sides traded goals through Emma Smith and Kyla Hanson.
