Another Round of NPL Queensland Men’s action is in the books with things getting tight at the top following the weekend’s Round 14 matches.
League leaders Gold Coast Knights were held to a 1-1 draw by third placed Moreton Bay United at Wolter Park on Saturday night.
A Godfrey Debele header put Knights in front after just two minutes but Jordan Farina rescued a point for the home side with a composed finish when he got in behind the Knights defence in the 77th minute.
Gold Coast United cut Knights lead at the top to just two points after picking up a 3-0 victory on the road against Eastern Suburbs on Saturday evening.
Goals from Curtis Stollery and Blake Thompson had United ahead by two at the break before Connor Smith scored directly from a corner kick to ice the result as Grae Piddick’s side returned to the winners circle.
Lions moved back into the top four with a 2-0 victory in the Brisbane Classico over City at Imperial Corp Stadium on Saturday night.
Ivan Ozzi headed home a Matt Ridenton corner in the 36th minute before Jackson Hart-Phillips poked in a finish via the post as Lions completed a league double over City.
Olympic played out a 0-0 draw with Sunshine Coast Wanderers on their return to Goodwin Park on Friday night.
Clear cut chances were few and far between in a tense battle that sees Olympic climb off the foot of the table on goal difference but remain seven points adrift of tenth placed Wanderers with eight games left to play.
Rochedale Rovers moved to within two points of the top four after a 3-1 victory over Redlands United at Underwood Park on Friday night.
Cooper McCormack opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when he skipped past his marker before unleashing a stunning strike into the top corner from the edge of the area but the home side were almost immediately pegged back when Michael Lee levelled the scores with a back post finish just moments later.
With the match in the balance the turning point came in the 63rd minute when Daniel Alterio received his marching orders following a collision with Rovers keeper Jacson Riley.
Ten minutes later Rochedale took the lead via a Marek Madle volley before Alex Warrilow rounded out the 3-1 win with a one-on-one finish in stoppage time.
Peninsula Power’s unbeaten run stretched to six matches as they came from behind to defeat Young Roar 2-1 at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday afternoon.
Fernando Nash had Roar ahead with a close range finish in the 31st minute before a freakish own goal that saw Zahi Addis’ skewed clearance fly into his own net levelled the scores in first half stoppage time.
Brenton Fox then secured all three points for Power with a second half penalty against a Roar side who finished with ten men after Kur Kur was sent off late in the contest.
