NPL Queensland Men Round 15 Review

The top four moved further clear of the chasing pack in the weekend’s NPL Queensland Men’s Round 15 action.

With the league leaders out of action thjs weekend Gold Coast United edged to within a point of top spot after playing out a 2-2 draw with Peninsula Power at Coplick Sports Park on Saturday night.

Riley Thompson-King bagged a brace for the home side with a pair of opportunistic finishes to catch out Power goalkeeper Lachlan Hunter.

Meanwhile Brenton Fox and new recruit Jack Hindle were on target for Power with finishes on the turn that mirrored one another.

Hindle, who arrived at Power in the June transfer window from EFL outfit Barrow in the UK was one of several new signings to debut for Power on Saturday night alongside Aaron Oppedisano, Josip Milicevic and Obren Kljajic.

NPL Men

Third placed Moreton Bay moved sit three points behind Gold Coast United after running out 4-1 winners over Eastern Suburbs at Heath Park on Saturday afternoon.

Jets skipper Declan Smith opened the scoring with a finish on the end of a corner for the visitors in the seventh minute before Emilio Martinez restored parity from the penalty spot nine minutes later.

Jeremy Stewart got in behind the Tigers defence and finished one-on-one in the 32nd minute to send Jets into the break with the lead before Marquez Walters and Jordan Farina rounded out a commanding win with a pair of second half strikes.

Lions made it back-to-back wins and extended the gap between themselves in fourth and the chasing pack with a 3-1 win over Young Roar at Luxury Paints Stadium on Friday night.

Fernando Nash gave Roar the lead with a poachers finish in the fourteenth minute but a quickfire pair of goals from Matt Ridenton and Joe Duckworth inside the opening ten minutes of the second half put Lions in front.

Andy Pengelly rounded out the scoring with a powerful volley from the edge of the area in the 84th minute, with the strike leaving him level at the top of the goalscoring charts with Marquez Walters on 12 goals each.

 

City are now four points adrift in the race for finals football after surrendering a lead late on in the contest in a 1-1 draw with Olympic at Samford Parklands.

Matt Thurtell put City ahead after six minutes when he turned home a Braydon Doolan cross for what was his eighth goal of the 2023 season.

Zac Kierpal snatched a point for Olympic when he bundled in a finish in the 87th minute  with the scores finishing at one apiece.

Pasquale De Vita, Sam Keogan and Kody Maude all debuted for Chris Grossman’s side who have been busy in the winter window.

Rochedale Rovers and Sunshine Coast Wanderers played out a 2-2 draw in Sunday’s other match at Underwood Park.

A Matt Nezval header had the Wanderers in front after 28 minutes but Harry Talbot restored parity seven minutes later from the penalty spot.

The Wanderers looked to have won it thanks to an 86th minute Marcus Worthington header but were denied all three points at the death by an own goal from keeper Gus Vaags.

Round 15s final match between Gold Coast Knights and Redlands United will be played on Tuesday, July 4 at the Croatian Sports Centre.
