NPL Queensland Women's Round 10 Review

Lions lead at the top of the NPL Queensland Women’s standings was cut to just two points following the weekend’s Round 10 action.

Lions were denied all three points for just the second time this season, after playing out a 1-1 draw with Mitchelton at Teralba Park on Sunday evening.

Tegan Riding rounded the keeper and finished into an empty net in the 37th minute to become the first player to score 200 NPL Queensland goals.

Five minutes later Kayo Yamamuro curled a stunning strike into the top corner from the top of the box to steal a share of the spoils for the Mustangs who finish the weekend in fifth.

Second placed Eastern Suburbs moved to within two points of top spot with a 3-1 win over Olympic at Meakin Park on Sunday evening.

The sides traded blows inside the opening seven minutes through Harkana Tkatchenko and Gabriella Francisco before Georgina Amos put Easts ahead with a dinked finish from an acute angle in the 63rd minute.

Stella Mazzoni rounded out the 3-1 victory ten minutes from time when she dispossessed La-Tesha Foster on the top of the box and slammed a finish into the bottom corner to stretch Easts unbeaten run to five matches.

Peninsula Power remain just a point behind Easts in third after defeating QAS 3-1 at AJ Kelly Park on Saturday night.

QAS took the lead in the 17th minute via a Georgia Dean penalty but Power found an equaliser within ten minutes through Bonnie Davies, who got in behind the defence and slammed an effort into the bottom corner from a tight angle.

Summer Walters put Power ahead in the 55th minute with a looping effort from range before Kirrily Phillips closed out the win with a cross that found its way into the top corner in the 83rd minute.

Gold Coast United returned to the winners circle with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Capalaba at Max Haynes Field on Saturday evening.

Momo Hayashi had United 2-0 ahead at the break thanks to a sublime pair of strikes including a bomb from 35 yards before Capalaba drew level six minutes into the second half following a quickfire pair of goals from Brittney Lacek and Kyla Hanson.

Claudia Danckert reinstated United’s lead in the 63rd minute with a header off a corner before Capalaba again equalised in the 81st minute through a close-range Ella Goodman effort.

With the match looking destined for a draw Danckert again stepped up in the 92nd minute to slam a half-volley into the top corner from the edge of the area and seal the points for United.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over Souths United at Ballinger Park on Sunday evening.

A Louise Rolfe brace secured all three points for the home side who now sit sixth in a congested bottom half of the table.
