NPL Queensland Women's Round 11 Preview

Another exciting weekend of NPL Queensland Women’s action awaits with a full complement of Round 11 matches getting underway on Saturday.

League leaders Lions host Sunshine Coast Wanderers in the opening game of the weekend at Luxury Paints Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Lions had their lead at the top cut to just two points after being held to a draw by Mitchelton last weekend while a resurgent Wanderers side are up to sixth after claiming back-to-back wins over Olympic and Souths United in their last two outings.

Lions ran out 4-0 winners when the sides met at the same venue in Round 2 thanks to goals from Rebecca Kirkup, Teagan Thompson, Tegan Riding and Maddison Teakle.

Hot on Lions heels are second placed Eastern Suburbs, who aim to keep pace with the league leaders when they host Souths United at Heath Park on Saturday night.

Easts come into Saturday’s clash having won their last five league matches on the bounce while Souths find themselves sliding down the table after losing their last three.

There was nothing to separate the sides when they played out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture at Wakerley Park in Round 2.

In the pick of Sunday’s action fifth placed Mitchelton host third placed Peninsula Power in re-match of last year’s FQPL 1 Grand Final at Teralba Park.

The league’s two newly promoted sides have both made a strong start to life in the top flight although Mitchelton will know they need to be taking points off the sides above them if they are to close the eight point gap between themselves and the top four.

Power ran out 2-0 winners when the sides met in Round 2 courtesy of Bonnie Davies and Ava Blizzard goals.

Fourth placed Gold Coast United will look to make it back-to-back wins over bottom placed Olympic, who they beat 7-2 at Coplicks earlier this season when the sides meet again at the same venue on Sunday evening.

In Sunday’s other match Capalaba and QAS will look to move away from the relegation zone when they go head-to-head at Clem Jones Field.
